PROCEDURE FOR TESTING INTO ENL
PROCEDIMIENTO DE PRUEBA EN ENL

1. Parents fill out a Home Language Questionnaire (HLQ).

2. If another language other than English is written on the HLQ the child will then be screened by the ENL teacher.

3. If the ENL teacher determines the child requires further testing, they will administer the New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners (NYSITELL)

4. Your child's score on the NYSITELL will determine if they will receive ENL services and how many minutes a week they are entitled to.

HOW DOES A CHILD TEST OUT OF ENL?

The New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) is given every year to assess English Language Learners (ELL) acquisition of the English language. The test is divided into four parts: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. After the test is administered, the child will be given one of five ENL levels based on their score. They are Entering, Emerging, Transitioning, Expanding and Commanding.These levels will determine the amount of ENL services the child will receive for the upcoming school year.

Entering: (beginner) minimal or no English comprehension receives 360 minutes of ENL services per week

Emerging: (low intermediate) limited English comprehension receives 360 minutes of ENL services per week

Transitioning: (intermediate) increase in English comprehension receives 180 minutes of services per week

Expanding:(advanced) good comprehension of the English language receives 180 minutes of ENL services per week

Commanding: (proficient) Communicate and understand English, understand and utilize academic language.
